Concerns over bone health are not just for older individuals. A documented increase in childhood fractures over the past forty years has raised awareness around early bone health. With many potential factors increasing a child’s fracture risk (genetics, inactivity, diet), it’s becoming more and more important to know who is at risk – especially when it could help prevent future fractures. Arthritis & Sports is proud to be one of the few clinics in Northern Virginia to offer pediatric DXA scanning. The gold standard for bone assessments, DXA (short for dual-energy radiograph absorptiometry) is the preferred method for clinical measurements of bone density in children because of its availability, reproducibility, speed, and low exposure to radiation. The general goals of bone densitometry are to identify patients at greatest risk of skeletal fragility fractures, to guide decisions regarding treatment, and to monitor responses to therapy. Skeletal assessments have been recommended for: ▶ children with recurrent fractures, bone pain, bone deformities, or osteopenia Via https://local.google.com/place?id=11877724090323646080&use=posts&lpsid=CIHM0ogKEICAgIC2nsmDyAE
